Gambling is a monster, it eat up your money, your family, and your soul. Despite knowing of many harmful negative consequences that gambling brings about, many people just cannot control themselves and become the slaves of gambling. If one person once starts gambling, he will plunge more and more deeply into the mire of debt and in the end he will lose himself. Thus, I believe that gambling should be strictly banned as it will bring about harmful consequences that lead to the gambler’s ruin and his family or friend’s ruin. I will explore the negative consequences that caused by gambling, this worrying problem.
The gambler will destroy his life by gambling. People gamble to win, gamblers always want to win the money and think the things that money can buy but they will not check up once a while and make sure he has not lost and things that money cannot buy. Once the person starts gambling, he will become guilty and always think on the big amount of money that comes in one second. He will forget that hard work brings about reward and his value will be destroyed. If he wins, his desire of money will not let him stop and drives him continue to gamble. Once he loses, he will be panic and want to win back the money and that often causes him to lose more and more as people in panic usually cannot make the right decision. Thus he will end up losing a lot of money and get into financial trouble and he then will want to win the money back unstoppably and cannot control his impulse to gamble. That will lead to spending too much time and effort in gambling and causes problem to his work, study or relationship. As the gambler becomes a slave of gambling, all he think is to win money back, he will lose himself and do not care about else. Then the gambler will not be conscious about what is happening around and will give up the job or study and avoid communicating with others and spend time in gambling in whole day. This again leads to stress and pressure as the gambler’s doubts will not be able to be shared with anyone. Some gamblers will choose drinking and taking drugs that to get relaxation. Some gamblers are so helpless that they choose to suicide. And some are propelled towards life of crime. In the most desperate phase of compulsive gambling, they will do anything to gamble They choose to steal, rob or even murder to get money. Data from gambling communities across the country indicates that gambling does indeed foster a significant increase in crime. In Atlantic City , the total number of crimes within a 30-mile radius of Atlantic City increased by 107 percent in the nine years following the introduction of casinos to Atlantic City. In all three ways, the gambling has destroyed the gambler’s life.
However, people who really suffer from gambling are not the gamblers only. When the gamblers welter in gambling, they will have less time to spend with the family or communicate with their friends. Their children will experience less love than other children and that will cause these children to think that they are different from the others and lead to problems like difficulty to make friends or becoming eccentric. Moreover, parents are the most direct model to the children, if the parents gamble non-stop, this will affect the development of the child’s character. Like father, like son, the child may even become another gambler when grow up. So gambling causes very serious problem to the gambler’s family. On the other hand, when the gambler loses all the money he has, he will think on the money of the family and friends. Sometimes, the money used for the child’s education will be taken and lost and this will lead to shatter of a family. In the anti-gambling video produced by national council, the gambler father even beg for the 5-year daughter to give him her pocket money to “strike for a big one”. That is really pathetic and clearly shows that how the gambler’s family who is innocent is suffered from gambling.
In conclusion, I think gambling will destroy the gambler’s life and also make the gambler’s family or friends suffer. Gambling has brought so many harmful consequences and thus I think gambling should be strictly banned. I sincerely hope that cases such as 74 people nabbed in raid on gambling party at chalets will not happen again.

ERP:”A Hanging” by George Orwell
Question chosen: a) Recall a time you witnessed someone being punished and the circumstances of the offence. How did the incident affect you and your understanding of the purpose of punishment?
“Punishment”, this is a horrifying word. People would not have a cheerful smile upon seeing it. However, I had understood the true meaning of this word after that incident which still reverberates in my mind today.
That was during the time I was in Primary 6. The hall was in a dead silence that day. The atmosphere of tension was killing everyone, including me. I even did not dare to breathe comfortably as I know just a single sound would violate the non-joking event: a caning.
One student was brought up to the stage by the principal. He was tall and strong, wearing neat and clean uniform. If his facial expression was not showing struggle and regret , I could not believe he was the one that going to be caned.
“Dear students , as you all know, today is a very bad day. John was caught red-handed for shoplifting in a bookshop. This breaks our school’s law of course and is a very serious offence which cannot be forgiven easily. By our school’s law , John will be caned. John now will apologies to school.” The strict voice of principal woke everyone up from the tense and unsure waiting. Many were shaking their heads with a pitiful sigh. I also felt that that was the end to John. He could have bright future and become a successful man. However, he was caned and published in front of public then and that would be a bad mark in his body for his rest of life. Caning in front of the public would trash his dignity and reputation. He would be affected by the bad mark for everything he did and that meant he might say Nunc Dimmittis to success.
“I am sorry! I am so sorry! I was eaten up by greed. I should never steal the book. Sorry! Please give me one more chance…” tears of fear and regret were flowing down from his languish face. His voice was so desperate that was like the SOS cry of a man who was trapped in a isolated island. I did not know why but my body was just trembling and then I realize tear was also flowing down from my eyes. I knew that was tear of sympathy. He wanted to repent past mistakes from his deep heart. He should be given mercy and forgive. I was almost to stand up to beg the principal to give him another chance and not destroying his future.
However, hopelessly , John bent down to the table and the bamboo cane was taken out. The caning was about to begin. I was trembling badly that I really did not want to see the cruel scene. The principal slashed the cane down with great strength that I could even hear the roar of slashing. John’s cry of pain and suffering echoes in the hall and in my heart too. I turned my eyes away and prayed John would be OK. Till the end, even John's cry was fainted. Everyone was just like finishing watching a slaughter, remained frightened and aghast.
Poor John, I guessed his spirit had been dead. However, to my great shock, the principal was standing on the stage tearfully. “John, you are still my good boy. Don’t think I like to do this. I punish you and cane you because I love you and I am responsible of you. This is a painful reminder that guides you to the right way. I am your friend, not enemy.” These few touching sentences resound again and again in my life. They guided me to do the right decision and know how to appreciate the people who care about me.
Yes. The principal taught me the true meaning of punishment. I could still remember how John turning to a new leaf and doing well in the PSLE after hearing the principal. A punishment is not a bad mark of one or an obstruction to success but a reminder to guide you to the right way.Although it is painful, it is impactful. The one who punish you is the one who care about you and take responsibility of you. He is your friend but not enemy as he know what is good for you. I tell these to myself until today.

Topic chosen:Orchard Road facelift
I walked along Orchard Road,trying to catch what the changes were.However,everything seems the same.I heard Orchard Road had a big makeover while i could not even notice one single change.With that,I disagree to the face lift on Orchard Road to a large extent.
Orchard Road had a $40 million makeover but 40 per cent of the people Lifestyle pooled did not notice the changes. $40 million is a big amount.With $40 million,they could build a bridge across the road already.However,they only managed to do something that even cannot be noticed.That was really a waste of money.
Moreover,a facelift ought to be looking better.Yet many people do not think Orchard Road looks better.It even looks worse, for example, the flower totems which is part of the face lift are annoying as they are blocking people's view and people do not even really know the purpose of the glass panel.Facelift did not make Orchard Road looking better, instead , it made people inconvenient and confused. It was so meanless and there was really no purpose for it.
